Title: Rudder tip rib and counterweight prep and a good learning moment.
Finally got back to the build after moving the shop into the garage. So far I'm very glad I made the move, it has already paid off, the wife is happier! I spent a few evenings getting organized and then started back on the rudder skeleton. I got R703 and R713 riveted together being careful not to rivet the last few holes on each side as those get riveted to the skin later on. The next step was to prep the actual lead counterweight by countersinking it for the two through bolts and dimple the skin as well. I had the correct size countersink so that part was straight forward. What I didn't have was the exact size dimple dies that I needed. I did have a large dimple die which looks 'close enough'. So I used this to start the skin dimple and following advice from a few other builders, I will let the bolt finish the dimple when they are tightened down to final torque specs. It was during this process that I realized from reading through some of online sites that my plans did not have the latest build instructions. There have been cases where the nuts and washers have worked themselves loose from vibration and the softness of the lead material on this counterweight. My build plans that came with the kit are from 2011, my preview plans are from early 2016 and the latest plans available for the RV-8 are from the end of 2016. Long story short, always make sure you have at least a reference to the latest plans as they may contain some modifications to the kit that you may not be aware of as I was in this case. Vans has since added an extra piece of aluminum across the top of the two bolts to help secure this counterweight from coming loose. This small mod uses a couple of nut plates that are riveted into a small piece of aluminum strip. Fortunately I was alerted to this before getting too far along. I was able to order the extra hardware from Vans and now will add this safety measure to this part of the build. Lesson learned, always reference the latest plans! With the rudder tip rib prepped and counterweight fitted, that completed the work on this small section.
