Feb 24, 2021     Chapter 7 - Rudder - (15 hours)       Category: 5. Empennage
The assembly of the Rudder was pretty straightforward but when the instructions suggest using two people to attach the skins, USE TWO PEOPLE! It was a difficult experience doing it my myself and I will not make that mistake again. I made a few mistakes and just may redo the entire Rudder again because I am not as happy with it as I should be. Will keep you informed if I reorder this and the vertical stabilizer for the same reason. The more I do the better I get. I am not going for perfection but I also want to be proud of the work I am doing and making sure I am doing it right for all of the safety reasons there may be.

Feb 24, 2021     Chapter 8 - Horizontal Stabilizer       Category: 5. Empennage
While working on my horizontal stabilizer I, like many others before me, mis-drilled several holes which violated the required edge distance. By the time I had discovered my error I had already assembled the frame. I reordered the parts and received them from Vans. I then discovered that the part numbered HS-0902 is not the same as the HS-00902-1 called out in the plans. I got the experience of calling Vans again to get the right part. It cost $52 and another $360 for shipping! An expensive mistake that could have been avoided if I had just read the service bulletins before starting Chapter 8. This is not a mistake I will make again! The replacement piece just showed up and I will begin the HS all over again!

Sep 28, 2019     Kit Contents       Category: 4. Inventory
These are all of the parts that will eventually be used to build the plane. Notice that little things like engine, electronics, radios, etc. are not in this picture!

Sep 26, 2019     RV14 - Unpacking the Crate - Video       Category: 3. Unpacking
The Vans crate was delivered on 19 Jul 2019 by SAIA Freight. The driver was great and very accommodating and extremely understanding with the limitations of the delivery site.

The crate was undamaged and as you will see, the packing was fantastic.

A parts inventory revealed one missing part, a single, black 4 inch tie. Considering all of the thousands of parts, to be missing one tiny, insignificant part is a testament to the great quality control of Vans.
