Sufficient cooling of a 0-540 engine on a hot summer day while climbing to altitude, yet being able to descend rapidly on a cold winter day is somewhat of a challenge I'm concerned about. Research is leading me to believe cowl flaps could help me have the flexibility to do both.
Here is a thread on the Bearhawk forum with good discussion on the topic
http://bearhawkforums.com/forum/bearhawk-general-discussion-news/19571-cowl-flapsI would like to avoid installing a lip. Tony Bingelis says "Some builders and manufacturers (also in desperation) resort to the installation of a large, deflected lip along the bottom opening in an effort to create a sort of venturi-like low pressure area to improve the airflow through the engine cowling. If you have to depend upon this double-ugly solution, you should probably restudy your cowling and cooling installation and rework it."
