Apr 06, 2024     Move to CT       Category: Move
Move to CT. I finished up loading up the plane parts (of which there are MANY!!) and all the shop tables/parts/fairings/etc. I think everything is as well packed as I can get it. The fairings are in the car that Leigha will be following me with. We ended up driving to Rob's house that afternoon. Everything survived perfectly when we got there! We got all unloaded and stashed away in his garage until after we move and can go get it. That move to the new house will also be stressful, but I hope a little less so now that I've done it once. Bye for now, plane. Until next time, when I start on Chapter 30!

Apr 05, 2024     Move to CT - (4.0 hours) Category: Move
Move to CT. Well, we've made the decision to move. This has been in the works for a while, but I've been a bit in denial and scared to death to move the plane. I love my shop and working on the plane, and moving it is a HUGE risk. But alas, here we go. I'm going to move it to my brother Rob's house for temporary storage until we get moved and settled whereever we wind up in CT. I got a 26' Uhaul and Craig's help tonight to start loading up all the plane parts. I'm going slowly and methodically, strapping everything down securely but without bending metal. I sure hope this works!

Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-23, Step 1. LAST STEP in Chapter 29! I riveted on the horizontal Fwd Fuse Ribers on the side skins today. That finishes up this LOOOOONG chapter that I started back in October! Wow….

Mar 31, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-20, Step 1 - (2.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-20, Step 1. I finished up riveting on the right floor panel and got the left floor panel riveted on as well. Looks clean!!

Mar 29, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-20, Step 1 - (2.0 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-20, Step 1. Now onto the cabin floor panels. I got the right floor panel clecoed in, then realized that I had never riveted on the nutplates on the side that I was supposed to have done. So I took it off, riveted those nutplates on, clecoed it back on, and then started pull riveting it into place. Some of the rivets are a little rough to reach with the pull riveter, but no major issues.

Mar 28, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-22, Steps 1-2 - (2.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-22, Steps 1-2. I did all that today for the right gear mount. I got it installed, bolted, and torqued today as with the left side. Much easier doing things a second time!

Mar 27, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-22, Step 1 - (2.0 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-22, Step 1. I finished up bolting the left gear mount in today. Getting the washers and nuts on all the bolts was a little challenging, and getting each bolt torqued to the proper amount was not too easy for some, but I got there. The Handee tool that I bought was awesome at reaching these placed and getting the washers/nuts in place. Thanks to the RV-10 community on facebook for this hint! I torqued the AN3 bolts to 28 in/lbs, the AN4 bolts to 85 in/lbs, and the AN5 bolt to 150 in/lbs.

Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Steps 10-13; Page 29-21, Steps 12-13; Page 29-22, Steps 1-2. Now that my 4-40 tap came in, I finished up the vent assemblies. I drilled #43 the hole and tapped the hole through the VENT-00004 and assembly, then riveted everything together and installed it in the plane. Getting the right amount of friction with the screw tightness to hold the vent closed but allow it to open with the right force took a bit of adjustment, but I got it. I think riveted the doubler plate in place on the side skins in preparation for the gear mount installation, then put the left gear mount in place (with the spacer I created) and started getting bolts put into place (with Boelube). Most go right in without fuss; others need just a bit of encouragement, but I'm VERY happy with the fit!

Mar 26, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 4-11 - (1.0 hour)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 4-11. Back to the gear mount on the right side. With my new 1/4" drill bits, I drill the holes in the sides of the gear mounts through the drill templates (the reflective roofers tape I got was less than helpful here keeping the drill bit perpendicular to the hole). But, I got the holes drilled and the gear mount removed. I had to use my furniture foot jig to remove the AN5 bolt, but once I got it started, it came right out.

Mar 25, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Steps 6-8 - (1.0 hour)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Steps 6-8. Back to finishing up the vents (except, no - I should read ahead and order what I need to before I get to the step!). I rivet the vent assemblies together and get the VENT-00004 in place, then realize I don't have a 4-40 tap to tap the right size screw hole in these. So, I order that drom Amazon and await its delivery. Boy, how did people do this before Amazon?!?!

Mar 22, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Step 5 - (1.0 hour) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Step 5. Warm enough weather today to prime the vents. I only have a few small pieces, so I'm not going to bother with the Akzo primer. Just using a rattle can primer for this.

Mar 19, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 1-3 - (2 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 1-3. Time to do all that again on the right side. I install the drill templates and file open the gear pipe hole on the belly, then get the gear mount temporarily bolted into position. That AN5 bolt was much smoother going in on this side, but I drilled the powder coating out of that hole this time. That sure seemed to help!

Mar 18, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Step 11 - (1.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Step 11. Ok, the down time allowed me to think of how to remove that stubborn bolt. Keeping it in place is clearly not an option - those holes created a ton of debris and are very jagged - I need to get the gear mounts out of there so I can clean up the mess and the holes. I ended up grabbing a steel bar and some screwable furniture feet and drilled/tapped holes in the bar in the right locations that I can put the feet through to brace the bar in place between the spars. Then, I drilled/tapped a hole in the center for a bolt to go through that will evenly push the stubborn AN5 bolt back out. As I slowly tighten the bolt through the bar, even though the bar is bending a bit, it's working! I'm inching that AN5 bolt out! I have to re-position several times and cut a spacer to go into the hole to keep pushing, but I eventually get it out!!!! WHEW!!! I get the gear mount out and clean up the holes and mess and go celebrate my success! Before removing the mount, I did read ahead to see that if there's a gap between the gear mount and the side doubler plate, I should create a spacer. I did have a gap on the bottom side, so I fabricated a spacer out of an appropriately thick piece of Al skin I had laying around and used the drill template to size/shape the spacer and drill the holes. I will prime that when I prime the vent parts.

Mar 16, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 4-10 - (1.5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 4-10. Now time to match drill the holes through the templates and through the steel in the gear mounts on the side. I use Boelube for the drill bit, but it's slow going. I got the holes drilled on the left side but decide I've dulled my 1/4" drill bit enough that I need to order some more.

Mar 15, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Step 3 Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Step 3. Oh boy. "Temporarily bolt the landing gear mount in place"… WAY easier said than done. The bolt holes lined up incredibly well, but the one bolt they want you to install 'temporarily' is down in the corner in and around a bunch of other stuff. It is WAY too tight a fit to just slide into place (it's an AN5 bolt), and too buried to be able to tap it into place. I ended up using a punch held onto to the bolt head, with a socket that fit the punch head and a socket extension (6") to be able to get something I could tap with a hammer to push the bolt through. Except it doesn't want to go, and I'm having to hit it WAY harder than I'd like. I decide that perhaps I didn't drill out the powder coating from that hole in the gear mount, so I try to remove the bolt, but now it is definitely stuck. I can't reach the back end to tap it back out because it's between the spars. Ugh! I finally decide to give it hell and pound it through all the way so I can drill all the holes I need to and then figure out what to do. It worked - now it's in there but I'm not sure it's ever coming out.

Mar 13, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 1-2 - (1.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-21, Steps 1-2. Watching Ryan Gromfin's youtube videos, he suggests waiting to rivet the cabin floor panels until after installing the landing gear mounts. So, I'm skipping the floor panels for now and jumping straight into the gear mounts. I got the drill templates and clecoed them into place on the left side. I didn't fully understand what the plans were asking about 'enlarge the cutouts...' but I soon learned. The pipe end of the gear mounts that extends down through the bottom of the fuselage couldn't clear the hole, as the hole was too small and needed to be filed down. So I filed. And filed. And filed some more. By the end, I was able to get the hole enlarged enough to fit the gear mount so it would sit all the way down. The hole isn't a pretty oval anymore, but no one will see it.... I also bought some reflecting roofers tape for the next step from Home Depot.

Mar 11, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Step 5; Page 29-21, Steps 1-2 - (1.5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Step 5; Page 29-21, Steps 1-2. And file I did. It took a decent amount of filing to get the screw to pass through the entire slot unimpeded, but I got there! Then I machine countersunk the needed holes and disassembled/deburred to vent assemblies. They are awaiting priming before I can install them. I'll wait for a bit to make sure there are no other parts on this chapter that need priming.

Mar 10, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Steps 2-4 Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-19, Steps 2-4. I clecoed the vent parts together and final drilled the holes between them. One of the steps is to file the curved slot to allow the screw to pass through without interference. This is a tight fit and I don't have a small enough file. I ordered a small chainsaw file from Amazon that will get here today, so I'll file it tomorrow.

Mar 06, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1; 29-19, Step 1 - (1.3 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1; 29-19, Step 1. I got the right fwd side skin finished up today! Looks like a fuselage without all those clecos in it! I really love seeing parts right after I finish riveting them. Seeing them come together with clecos the first time is exciting, but nothing like seeing it once there are no clecos in it anymore! Then I started working on the vents. I cut apart and deburred the vent brackets and vent slides.

Mar 05, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (2.0 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1. More right fwd side skin riveting today, including with the nickle stack for those rivets right up against the spar.

Mar 03, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (1.5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1. I started riveting the right fwd side skin today.

Mar 02, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (1.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1. I finished up riveting the left fwd side skin. I needed to use a pull rivet up against the firewall where the long longeron comes in because I couldn't reach that with the bucking bar.

Feb 29, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (2.0 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1. More riveting on the left fwd side skin. I finally had to tackle the problem reaching the flush rivets up against the spar, for both the fwd and mid side skins. I couldn't reach those rivets with the flush rivet set in the gun because the gun would hit the spar before it got to the rivets. So, I ended up duct taping a stack of 5 nickles together, then to the flush rivet set and using that. It worked well enough, but lost a lot of the energy through the nickle stack so really had to hit those rivets for quite a while to get them to set. But, I ended up getting it done for both fwd and mid side skins on the left side.

Feb 28, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (1.8 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-18, Step 1. I started riveting the remainder of the left side skin rivets.

Feb 27, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1; Page 29-18, Step 1 - (2.0 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1; Page 29-18, Step 1. I grabbed Leigha today to help rivet the under side rivets on the fuselage, around the curve of the side skins. We knocked out the mid fuse skins (right and left, except for the aft trailing rivets not to do) and the fwd side skin rivets (right and left).

Feb 26, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 3 - (1.0 hour) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 3. Short day today - I finished up riveting on the mid cabin decks. They rivet to the fwd/aft/mid uprights and to the longeron. The longeron rivets are a little challenging to reach up underneath the lip of the decks, but no problems.

Feb 24, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Steps 1-3 - (2.0 hours) Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Steps 1-3. Today, I finished up riveting the right side skin, then clecoed the mid cabin decks (i.e., the arm rests) in place and started riveting them in.

Feb 13, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1 - (2.0 hours)       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1. I continued riveting the right side mid fuse skin today, except for the rivets on the under side of the fuse.

Feb 12, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1. I started riveting the right side mid fuse skin. I again left the rivets right along the spar undone until I can figure out a better solution.

Feb 09, 2024     Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1       Category: Fuselage
Fuse Side Skins; Page 29-17, Step 1. I finished riveting the left side skin today. Beyond the flush rivets right up against the spar, none were too difficult. I did have to use a few longer rivets than what the plans called for (see note I made in the plans) to get the right shop head size. I also couldn't reach the aft rivets on the underside of the fuselage - I'll have to wait for help on those. The fwd skins start on the under side, so I'll knock those out when I get Leigha to help rivet these as well.
