Mar 24, 2024     Tail Art - (16 hours)       Category: Paint / Decals
Completed flames 3/29/24.
Operations: Masked flames with 1/16" fine line tape, fog coated white, waited 24 hours, painted yellow, masked, waited 24 hours, painted orange, masked, waited 24 hours, painted "red". Have some cleanup to do... I'll attempt to color sand (for the blue orange peel) first and see what that can do. Otherwise, I'll have to re-mask and paint the black a little wider.

Masked and painted green today.

Feb 26, 2024     Pattern Seats - (4 hours)       Category: Interior Finish
Pattered seat cushions for upholstery. Have emails out to SailRite and Oregon Aero on recommendations on how to close up the pass thru hole.

Received the following email from Eric Grant at SailRite. “ Thanks for reaching out to us. I assume your project has a backer-board, so the vinyl fabric will be pulled down through the hole and stapled on the backside. If that is the case it is rather simple. Cut your hole then cut a boxing to go inside the walls of the hole. Be sure to add enough width to staple the boxing to the backer-board. If your foam is 3 inches deep I would cut a 5 inch boxing width. Cut 45 degree slits at each corner of the top plate, not the boxing, where the hole's corners rest. The sew the boxing strip around the hole, leaving an end unsewn so you can match it up to the opposite end when it is stitched around. When you reach a corner take a pen and mark the 45 degreen slit onto the boxing, do not cut just mark, so you know when to burry the needle and make your 90 degree turn.
I hope this helps, I sewed up a very small demo for you of one corner, then I topstitched with the seam allowance in the boxing, but it could instead be sewn in the top plate, if desired. ”

Received second email from SailRite's Eric Grant.
Ok no backer board.... so instead you have two options:
1. Make a bottom plate from fabric that has a finished (jacket style) #5 coil zipper that goes all around the bottom plate's sides about 2 inches away from the edge. Then you would have a top plate of fabric with the rectangular hole that has the boxing sewn to it and that boxing of that hole would also be sewn onto the bottom plate that has the zipper all around the sides. After it is sewn up you unzip the bottom plate and stuff the bottom plate through the hole then zip the bottom plate to the boxing of the top plate. -

2. Sew a finished zipper to the bottom of the rectangular hole boxing and to the other side of the zipper to the bottom plate.
I hope this helps answer your questions. Keep me posted if you have questions.

Meanwhile, Dave Shelton from Oregon Aero let me know they do option 1 with Velcro vice zipper. This avoids the risk of scratching and added bulk from the zipper.

Dec 13, 2023     Alternate Air - (2 hours)       Category: Engine
Replaced stock alternate air door with Aircraft Specialty (AS) provided door. I did not like the RTV sealant idea holding down the cable. I didn't think I could open the door fully in the event of icing or air filter becoming saturated with water.

The AS door had to be shaped to match the original door.

The new installation doesn't guarantee the ability to close the door w/o visual verification, but that can be handled if I ever need to use it. Also, the long unguarded wire acts as a spring and does not make it obvious that the knob is set to be ~1/16"out when the door is fully closed.

In the end, I'm not convinced the modification was worth the time and effort.
