Apr 07, 2024     Meeting with Dynon - (1 hour) Category: Avionics
Had a video call with Dynon to discuss options. Received a quote with three options for review.

Apr 02, 2024     Landing Gear - (2.5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Reassembled gear legs. Drilled 5/16" holes for the Inboard Main Gear Attach Brackets and Inboard Wear Plates. Drilled 1/4" holes in the outer holes of the Inboard Wear Plates. Drilled out access holes in the Bottom Skin to fit wrench and socket. Drilled 1/4" holes in the outer holes of the Outboard Wear Plates.

Formed a double bend ion the gear covers to fit over the fatter aluminum landing gear.

Removed gear, cleaned all metal shavings, and deburred all holes. Flipped fuselage back over so it sits upright.

Mar 26, 2024     Landing Gear - (2.5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Spoke with Sky Designs. Agreed that since two independent measurements verified the same distance from the tail spring to each gear leg, and that the method of measuring toe in / toe out verified that the gear legs were parallel to the fuselage centerline, the distance between the "zees" not matching the nominal dimensions was acceptable.

Re-rigged everything to check dimensions one final time. Tightened bolt on landing gear to reduce allowance for any further movement while drilling. Drilled the 3/8" holes to secure the outboard brackets. Removed gear legs and hardware to clean up all metal shavings. Need to get 5/16" drill bit to drill final holes for the inboard brackets.

Mar 24, 2024     Landing Gear - (5 hours) Category: Fuselage
Aligned gear legs with multiple measurements and angles. Fabricated a SS wire measuring tape with movable locking collar to measure from tail spring bolt to bottom of landing gear legs .Also used two measuring tapes on the floor from tail to plum bobs hanging from rear of gear legs. Measured toe in / toe out. Measured distance between front and rear sides of gear legs to the forward and rear "zees". This measurement was quite far off the nominal measurement given in the Sky Designs Manual. Played around with spacing for a few hours before deciding to call Sky Designs for guidance.

Mar 05, 2024     Landing Gear - (0.5 hour) Category: Fuselage
Spoke with Sky Designs and got further clarity. Trimmed additional bottom skin and support channel on the aft side to accommodate outboard gear bracket with the required Van's offset of 3/16".

Mar 02, 2024     Landing Gear - (1.2 hours) Category: Fuselage
Trim bottom skins to accept new outboard gear leg attach brackets. Still not enough room for the brackets to be offset the correct 3/16" from the edge - will call Sky Designs for information.

Mar 01, 2024     Stall Warner - (1.5 hours) Category: Wings
Will not use the Van's stall warning device and instead use AOA. Drilled, dimpled, and deburred existing holes in wing leading edge for the stall warning device. Installed smaller head "oops rivets" in the two holes on the leading edge, and regular flush rivets in the remaining five holes.

Feb 18, 2024     Gear Legs - (1.75 hours) Category: Fuselage
Flipped fuselage upside down and gathered parts for Sky Designs gear legs. Reviewed Vans and Sky Designs directions and DWG 75. Final drilled existing holes for gear leg bolts. Fit new inboard gear leg attached brackets to gear legs. Used Scotch Brite wheel to adjust each gear leg to accept bracket. Used drill press to match drill holes in the inboard and outboard wear plates. Assembled gear legs onto fuselage using the 7/16" bolts.

Feb 10, 2024     Fuel Tanks - Re-attach - (2.25 hours) Category: Wings
Re-attached fuel tanks to wings. Secured all screws (all new screws used) and bolts. Torqued bolts and applied torque seal.

Feb 03, 2024     Fuel Tanks - Leak Test - (1.5 hours) Category: Wings
Used Van's recommended method to leak test both fuel tanks. Used supplied fittings and balloon to slightly pressurize tanks. Sprayed with water and soap solution to check for leaks and repeated test a second time on each tank. No leaks found in either tank using this method.

After performing leak test with soap solution, each tank sat for a minimum of 48 hours with the balloon inflated. The balloon did not deflate at all over this time for either tank.

Jan 21, 2024     Fuel Tanks - Removal - (2.5 hours) Category: Wings
Removed fuel tanks from each wing.

Jan 14, 2024     NACA Duct - (2.5 hours) Category: Wings
Located five holes in wing to secure NACA duct with rivets. Drilled, deburred, and dimpled holes after transferring and drilling holes in NACA duct. Created aluminum "washers" to protect plastic duct when riveting, and glued to duct. Put small bead of Pro-Seal around duct and riveted to wing.

Jan 13, 2024     NACA Duct - (2 hours) Category: Wings
Used SS mesh splatter guard to create screen for fresh air inlet NACA duct. Cut, formed, and glued to NACA duct. Attached hose to to NACA duct over screen and secured with supplied hose clamp. Cut, formed, and glued screens to remaining ducts for later use.

Dec 27, 2023     Laser Cut Parts - (4 hours)       Category: Research
This post is a collection of all LCP activities to date.

Identified all Van's orders by order number and date, including empennage, wings, fuselage, and all parts orders. Verified the following:

1. Original empennage kit did not include any LCPs.

2. Both L and R elevators were rebuilt using potential LCPs for certain components, including the following; E-703 End Rib (L&R), E-704 Counterbalance Rib (L&R), E-606PP Elevator Trim Spar (L Only), E-720H5 Elevator Stiffeners (L Only), E-709End Root Rib Right (R Only). All parts are "Replacement Recommended" by Vans except E-720H5.

3. Original wing order did not include any LCPs.

4. Original fuselage order does include LCPs. Still TBD whether any components in the QB portion itself contain LCPs. Per Vans communication, November 2, 2021 was the first date that there were "Parts Being Produced." This was before any LCPs. April 29, 2022 was "Parts in Transit to Assembly Facility." There were LCPs in inventory between these first two dates. Approximately 16 LCPs were identified existing non-built inventory. They are all identified as "Acceptable for Use."

5. The footwell outside webs, already built, show signs of cracking at several rivets. All other built assemblies, including F-830-1 Seat Floor, F-831-1 Right Seat Floor, Floor Stiffeners, and front and rear seatback assemblies were 100% inspected under 30X magnification and showed no sign of an cracks or abnormalities. All of these components were identified as "Acceptable for Use."
