Oct 15, 2023 12 Installing the fuel tanks, finishing Right wing Category: Wings
I spent around 6 hours yesterday setting the fuel tank into the wing. It just didn't want to lay down where it joins the outer leading edge skin. After figuring out that it had a lot to do with the amount of Poly-Sulfate tank sealing compound, and that the leading edge was too tight against the end of the tank, I cut the leading edge back 1/4" as suggested in the build manual, and reduced the excess amount of tank sealant on the edges of the tank, and got a good fit. Today I drilled the holes to rivet the tank to the wing. I used my LASER level to layout the lines for the rivets, and it works well; also used it to level the spar before I started building the wing. It took a lot longer than I anticipated to lay out the drill pattern for the tank, as you have to lay out all the holes, and they drill into the spars so you don't want to mess-up here. Tomorrow I'll finish up-drilling the top side of the wing then tear it all apart to de-burr, dimple the skins, and the ribs, countersink the spar, and reassemble to rivet. Will not rivet the fuel tank to the wing at this time, but it's ready to be mounted. Still have to p/u some plastic tubing to run through the wing for the wingtip/landing lights wiring.
