Sep 28, 2022     horizontal stabilizer/elevator fabric - (6 hours)       Category: Empennage
Finished the fabric on the elevators. I had a hard time getting one of the perimeter tapes to go around the tight corners and it took a lot of heat and time. I ran out of the tape and opened another for the second elevator and it went around the corners without a problem. Not sure why but it is possible that one was Superfilght and the other Ceconite (both are approved for the Stewarts system).

Unfortunately I have had to spend a lot of time on getting a generator/compressor combination working at an airport with no electricity. I need 12 CFM for painting with Stewart's system and that means a 5HP compressor. A 5hp compressor motor needs a 15+ KW generator. I have the generator setup but it is 3 phase (Onan 30EK) so I need to change the compressor motor and pressure switch. The goal is to finish the fabric work and have a working compressor in order to paint in the next month before the weather gets cold. I am more or less on track but need to work on multiple projects at the same time. Today I got the elevator pieces up to the rib stitching step and I should be able to finish them tomorrow.

Made a couple of aluminum pieces for the trim horn opening. These are installed on the inside and will have a cover plate with a slot in it on the outside surface. I made them big enough to be able to inspect and lubricate the trim tube. Next is stitching and tapes for the copilot stabilizer piece.

Started on the tail feathers. The paper template is for an aluminum frame that will be glued inside the bottom to support a cover plate for the trim horn.
