Apr 19, 2023     10-16 - (.4 hour)       Category: Empennage
Decided not to follow the drilling called out in the plans. Dimpled those holes instead and will fill with a rivet. The ADSB antenna I'm planning on using will be mounted under the fuselage.

Mar 11, 2023     09-23 steps 11-14 - (2.6 hours)       Category: Empennage
Alternated sides of the trailing edge rivets. Turned out good, some minor pillowing. I may have put too much Proseal on. Thinking of trying the tape with clecoing to the straight edge if there is a next time trailing edge.

Aug 04, 2022     Fuselage inventory day 3 - (1.2 hours)       Category: Fuselage
More inventory! May need one more session to finish up. Then decide where to put it all.

Jul 30, 2022     Rudder 07-11 - (5.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Completed Rudder page 07-11. I scuffed the top of R-912 where the lead weight will sit and used Proseal on the bottom of the lead weight to bed it in. Tightened up the screws. On the aft 3 rivets for R-903, I could rivet the 3rd hole back so I used AN426AD3-3s in that position instead of the MK-319-BS. Last 2 holes have the MK-319-BS.

Jul 29, 2022     Starting the Fuse inventory - (1.5 hours)       Category: Fuselage

Jul 15, 2022     Rudder finishing up 07-09 - (1.3 hours)       Category: Empennage
Proseal can be messy. Finished up using Proseal on the trailing edge and riveting the skins together. Only mixed up 10/1 grams of Proseal. That was plenty for one side. Happy enough with the roller application. Will let it cure for at least a day.

Jul 13, 2022     Rudder 07-09 Step 1 - (1 hour)       Category: Empennage
Used ProSeal for the 1st time. Mixed up 20:2 grams by weight. It mixed up more than I needed for step 1. Will only mix 10:1 for the left side. Will wait at least a day to get started on step 2 to allow the ProSeal to set up. Was messy, went through 3 pairs of gloves to not get it on other things (like my phone for pictures).

Jul 12, 2022     Rudder - Finished 07-08 - (1.2 hours)       Category: Empennage
Finished riveting the right skin stiffeners and bottom rib. Pop-riveted the shear clips in place. Prepped the borrowed square pipe by removing the old pro-seal, getting it ready for 07-09.

Jul 11, 2022     Rudder 07-08 riveting the left side - (1.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Rivetted the stiffeners to the left side skin.

Jul 10, 2022     Rudder - finishing up 07-07 - (2 hours)       Category: Empennage

https://youtu.be/WH7k7dXdFus

Jul 09, 2022     07-07 Step 8 setup - (1 hour)       Category: Empennage
Setting up the jig from Cleaveland tool for the countersinking the trailing edge. Setup for 7 thousandths using a rivet in the hole and a standard micrometer. Setup on a scrap piece. Will complete the trailing edge tomorrow.

Jul 06, 2022     Rudder 07-07 Step 7 dimpling party - (2 hours)       Category: Empennage
Completed the dimpling called out in step 7 of page 07-07.

Jun 29, 2022     Finishing up 07-05 - (.5 hour)       Category: Empennage
Received AN470AD4-8 rivets from AircraftSpruce. Installed them today with squeezer. One tilted over alittle (enough to be noticeable). Drilled that out and re-squeezed.

Jun 26, 2022     07-06 Rudder work - (1.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Finished the initial dimpling of the skin called out in 07-04. I received the CS4 dimple die set (Cleaveland tools ships fast!) yesterday. Then did the mockup called out in 07-06. I'm back ordered on VA-140 trailing edge, so I'm going to read forward to see what I can do without it. Hopefully I'm not stuck on the rudder...

Jun 25, 2022     07-05, most of it - (1 hour)       Category: Empennage
Riveted up the rudder spar. My empennage kit had some back ordered rivets. Yup, you guessed it I'm B/O on the AN470AD4-8s. Spruce had them in stock, ordered these and some of the other HW that is B/O at Vans. I won't be able to finish the rudder though, the trailing edge wedge VA-140 is also B/O. I'll get as far as I can on the rudder without it.

Finished riveting the skin to the front spar and ribs. Cleco'd up the rear spar.

Jun 13, 2022     06-05 Let the skin riveting begin! - (2.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Drilled out 3 rivets from 06-04 and reinstalled. Started on 06-05. Completed steps 1, 2 and part of step 3. Riveted the skin to the front spar and VS-707 using rivet gun, 1" mushroom head and tungsten bucking bar.

https://youtu.be/6Vo0hKwjPz8

Jun 10, 2022     06-04 Riveting - (4.0 hours)       Category: Empennage
Completed the riveting on 06-04. Need to drill out and re-do 3 of them. I was off alittle when squeezing the longer rivets.

Jun 09, 2022     06-04 debur and priming - (1.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Primed the interior parts for the vert-stab. Not real happy with the spray of the zinc-chromate primer I bought from Spruce. Its not available anymore so after I use the remaining 6 cans, I'll need to find another primer. I've read some have had good luck with SEM primer (smooth application). Not as good from a corrosion perspective.

https://youtu.be/i6aRVZ37w9Y

Jun 08, 2022     06-04 deburing step - (1.5 hours) Category: Empennage
Took apart and deburred. Working to get to a good pressure with the single flute deburring tool.

Jun 07, 2022     Loaded up ceiling rack / tore down crate - (1.5 hours)       Category: Workshop
Thanks to my buddy Ron for helping load up the ceiling rack with the empennage parts. Then we tore down the crate and stored it for later use when I make the hor-stab cradle.

Jun 06, 2022     Garage ceiling storage rack. - (2.5 hours)       Category: Workshop

Jun 05, 2022     Finished 06-03 and started 06-04 - (6.5 hours)       Category: Empennage
Finished up 06-03 and 1,2,3 on 06-04. Working the deburring and will prime after. Not happy with the Cleaveland hex deburring bit. It seems to be leaving/creating burs. I emailed them to see if it is user error. I maybe using too much pressure. Learned to roll duct tape on a bit or on itself along with cardboard to deburr the inside edges of the ribs.

Jun 04, 2022     06-02 and some of 06-03 - (4 hours)       Category: Empennage
Worked all of 06-02 and some of 06-03.
