Completed and installed horizontal and vertical tip fairings. Disassembled empennage from aft fuselage and transported to my hanger for storage.

Completed tail light installation to rudder fairing. The Molex connection drawing that came with the kit has a mistake. The leads from the light need to have male ends since the wiring cable came with female end pre-installed.

Completed trim TE riveting and reinstalled. Confirmed rudder/trim tab spacing. Left rudder and v. stab in position on fuselage to install rudder fairing. Fairly tedious work to trim and sand fairing to fit to lower rudder assembly, match drill, dimple, countersink, and rivet nut plates.


 
Nov 30, 2019     Aft Fuselage: Trim Tab and Rudder Attachment - (6.0 hours)       Category: Empennage
Returned to trim tab assembly. Used RTV to glue foam ribs and set aside with weights overnight. Removed v. stab and final drilled two 1/4" h. stab attachment holes. Reattached v. stab and installed rudder assembly. This took some time to get the three eyebolts aligned. Did not final torque any bolts at this time since it will all need to come apart again later.


 
Nov 28, 2019     Aft Fuselage: Control Horn Drilling - (3 hours)       Category: Empennage
Confirmed right and left elevator travel and gaps. Left and right full up deflection measured 31deg and left and right full down deflection 29 deg. Elevator gap is 0.15 in (left) and 0.11 in (right). Measured torque tube to aft spar gap 9/64" greater than min required. Drilled hole through horns for attachment to clevis joint. Needed to turn down e-drill bushing to fit and pre-drilled #30 on drill press. Drilled hole in horns for later attachment of control rod.

Bolted H. stab to fuse and match drilled aft spar for attachment bolts. Threaded eye bolts on elevators and temporarily mounted to h. stab.


 
Nov 26, 2019     Aft Fuselage: Top Skin Riveting - (4 hours)       Category: Empennage
Riveted top skin using gun and bucking bar fore and aft as far as my arms would allow. Then turned fuse upside down and back-riveted the remainder. Worked pretty well.


 
Nov 19, 2019     Aft Fuselage: Left Side Skin and Top Skin Attachment       Category: Empennage
Installed clear tubing at intersection of j-stiffener and bulkheads to prevent wire chafing, not called out in plans. Secure tubing with RTV filet. Dimpled and riveted left side skin to aft fuselage. Applied 3M double-stick tape and clecoed top skin to side skins.

Completed pages 10-12 and 13. Placing bottom skin upside down on saw horses worked well for riveting. Has to use a slightly longer rivet (3-4 instead of 3-3.5) for the Stiffener Clip and Rudder Cable bracket.

The empennage kit arrived on 08/30/19, but only now had time to open and inventory. Took 17 days from order to delivery from Oregon, not bad considering the expected impact of AirVentures19 orders. Everything is very nicely packed.
