Aug 30, 2023     Clamped wires - (.5 hour)       Category: Engine

Put an adel clamp on the lower spark plug lines and CHT and EGT probe wires

Aug 05, 2023     Baffling - (4 hours)       Category: Engine
It was a day of measuring 3 times and cutting once… Of course I was sneaking up on the final shape, so there was sometimes 2, but more often 3-4 cuts required to reach the final shape/height.

Aug 05, 2023     Control Cables - (1.5 hours)       Category: Engine
Yesterday I cut the firewall pass through for the Carb Heat cable, today I reattached the Throttle and Mixture, I measured and cut the Carb Heat cable, attached it. The carb heat cable needed a stand off on the bracket for the adel clamp.

Aug 04, 2023     Odds and Ends - (5 hours)       Category: Engine
Re-attached a hose on cylinder #1

Grounded the engine block to the firewall negative stud

Started the Baffling process which is a bit baffling

Drilled the hole in the firewall for the carb heat control cable and set the cable in the pass through

Mar 21, 2023     Nose Bowl - (1 hour) Category: Engine
Sanding and filling imperfections.

Mar 20, 2023     Nose Bowl - (3 hours) Category: Engine
Sanded and filled more holes with superfill. Filled two connection points with JB Weld for extra strength

Mar 16, 2023     Breather system completed - (1 hour) Category: Engine

Also installed the over-pressure “T” for the Anti-Splat breather system.

Mar 01, 2023     Sanded nose bowl - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
Sanded the edges smooth to the touch, will need to fill some holes with superfill

Searched for flat steel stock 12 gauge for a brace to fit into the channel which the top cowl fits onto
Put hub caps on

Feb 28, 2023     Nosebowl - (2 hours)       Category: Engine
Mounted and initial fit of the nosebowl. Leveled and centered.

Positioning of the nosebowl made it obvious I needed a 1 3/4” prop hub spacer

Feb 28, 2023     Cable Control Bracket - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
This is version 5, and the final version. I extended the mixture clamp to better serve the angle of the mixture arm movement

Feb 27, 2023     Installed engine pre-heater - (.5 hour)       Category: Engine
Pretty easy, screw in and safety wire

Feb 26, 2023     Oil Sump Plug Removal - (.5 hour)       Category: Engine
Unsuccessfully!!!

The plug must have sealant, will need to use heat to remove it.

Reason for removing is to install the Anti-Splat oil heater

Feb 23, 2023     Torqued Engine Mount - (1 hour)       Category: Engine
I finally got around to torquing the engine mounts to the desired 37 ft.lbs. I had to add some washers to have the castle nuts in the correct orientation.

Feb 06, 2023     Magnetos - (3 hours) Category: Engine
Ok, 2 hours of the three hours was spent scratching my head and researching the P-Leads to the magnetos. Planned out the ignition switch wiring and the digital feed from the magnetos to the tachometer.

Feb 02, 2023     Installed Solenoids - (1 hour)       Category: Engine
Installed the master and starter solenoid on the firewall

Feb 02, 2023     Control Cable Bracket - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
I re-did the control cable bracket with stiffer .080” T-3 2024 sheet metal. I put in 3/4” aluminum angle for the adel clamps to hold the cable sleeves

Feb 01, 2023     Oil cooler fittings - (2.5 hours) Category: Engine
Took a lot of time clock the an fittings for the oil system hoses.

Jan 08, 2023     Alternator Installation - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
Should not have taken 3 hours but it did. Drilled safety wire holes on the support arm, deburred and primed the drilled area.

Jan 07, 2023     Measuring for cables - (.5 hour)       Category: Engine
Measured the cable lengths so I can order them

Dec 16, 2022     Final mounting of the Oil Cooler - (2.5 hours)       Category: Engine
Brackets made with nutplates using flush rivets so the oil cooler sits flush to the angle support

Need to remake the bottom support as the final fitting lifted the outside edge of the oil cooler about 1/4”.

Dec 15, 2022     Oil Filter - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
Using angle and fuel lines I secured (temporarily) oil cooler to the firewall.

Dec 08, 2022     Hanging the engine - (5 hours)       Category: Engine
YEP, took five hours to get the engine mounted. Not fun but it is done. Lots of adjustments with the hoist, lots of drift pins, lots of crushing. I did use a ratchet strap to squeeze the lower engine mount holes to line up with the engine case holes.

Dec 04, 2022     Exhaust Suspension - (2 hours)       Category: Engine
Had to do a bit of bending to the exhaust attach ring to match the angle of the supports. The support tubes that attach to the engine mount had to be shortened.

Dec 02, 2022     Mounting the Exhaust - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
I ordered a Vetterman exhaust based on great recommendations. I have had it for a couple of months, but only opened the box today. It looked like a jigsaw puzzle. But a look at the directions and it became clear what needed to be done. Except you can't tighten down the top pieces that mount to the cylinder because you then can't fit the next part. Ask me how I know. So there was a bit of putting one, taking off, loosening etc. I am very impressed by the exhaust. I measured from two points to two to have the dual pipes to have the same angle.

Dec 02, 2022     Hung the engine - (1.5 hours)       Category: Engine
I removed a magneto, used lot of duct tape to protect the engine mount from scratches. In the end it was pretty easy by following a “how to” posted to the internet but some Vans builders

Nov 10, 2022     Firewall and Engine Mount reinstall action - (3 hours)       Category: Engine
Reinstalled the firewall and engine mount in preparation for the engine to be mounted.
